Signs of Low Self-Esteem and Ways to Grow Confidence

  • Carol Robinson

Low self-esteem is a common issue that affects many individuals, manifesting as a persistent sense of inadequacy and self-doubt. Recognising the signs of low self-esteem is crucial, as it is the first step towards nurturing self love and developing confidence.  In this blog, we'll explore the key indicators of low self-esteem and introduce some effective ways to grow confidence, empowering you to lead a more abundant and fulfilling life.

Signs of Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem is a complex condition that can subtly infiltrate a person's life, affecting thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It's not always easy to spot, as symptoms can range from overt self-criticism to more concealed actions driven by a deep-seated sense of inadequacy.

Some common signs or symptoms of low self-esteem include:

  • Constant self-criticism

  • Fear of failure

  • Difficulty asserting themselves

  • Worry and doubt

  • Overly concerned with others’ opinions

  • Lack of confidence

  • People-pleasing tendencies

Constant Self-Criticism

Individuals with low self-esteem often engage in continuous self-criticism, internally berating themselves for real or perceived faults. This self-criticism goes beyond healthy self-reflection; it is a harsh, unforgiving dialogue that dismisses personal achievements and magnifies mistakes. For example, after a minor error at work, a person with low self-esteem might think, "I'm always messing up. I'm such a failure," instead of viewing the mistake as a learning opportunity.

Fear of Failure

The fear of failure for those with low self-esteem is not just about avoiding negative outcomes; it's about protecting their self-image. They may avoid trying new activities or taking on challenges because they're convinced they'll fail, and such failure will confirm their negative beliefs about themselves. This fear can lead to a life of unfulfilled potential, where safe, familiar routines are preferred over growth and exploration.

Difficulty Asserting Themselves

People with low self-esteem often find it hard to express their needs, desires, and opinions, especially if they believe it might cause conflict or disapproval. They might agree to things against their better judgement or refrain from expressing their thoughts in group settings. This difficulty in asserting themselves can result in unmet needs and resentment, further eroding their self-worth.

Worry and Doubt

Chronic worry and doubt can consume the thoughts of someone with low self-esteem. They may constantly question their decisions, abilities, and worth, leading to significant stress and anxiety. This might manifest in a professional setting as hesitation to contribute ideas or take on new responsibilities, stifled by the fear that they won’t measure up to expectations or standards.

Overly Concerned with Others’ Opinions

Individuals with low self-esteem often place too much importance on how they are perceived by others. They may change their behaviour, suppress their true selves, or make decisions based on what they think will earn approval rather than what is best for them. This excessive concern can stifle their authenticity and lead to a life that feels not their own.

Lack of Confidence

A lack of confidence can manifest in many areas of life for someone with low self-esteem. They might exhibit hesitancy in their speech, avoid eye contact, or have a general demeanour that lacks assertiveness. This lack of confidence can prevent them from pursuing opportunities, forming healthy relationships, or standing up for themselves in challenging situations.

People-Pleasing Tendencies

The tendency to please others often stems from a fear of rejection or a desire to be liked and accepted. People with low self-esteem may go to great lengths to accommodate others, even at the cost of their own well-being or personal values. This might look like consistently saying yes to additional workloads, going along with plans they dislike, or failing to challenge disrespectful behaviour from others.

Impact of Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem extends its influence far beyond the individual, affecting various aspects of life. Those with low self-esteem see profound impacts on their:

  • Personal life

  • Relationships

  • Mental health

  • Career and academic performance

  • Physical health

  • Self-care

The impact of low self-esteem is multifaceted, affecting nearly all areas of life. Behaviours associated with low self-esteem can reinforce a negative cycle that damages the individual’s health and quality of life. Breaking this cycle requires a conscious effort to build confidence.

Ways to Grow Confidence

Set Realistic Yet Progressive Goals

Setting realistic yet progressive goals is a balanced approach that encourages steady growth while remaining achievable. This method is about establishing objectives that are challenging enough to promote personal development but not so daunting that they set you up for failure.  Start with small, manageable objectives and gradually increase the complexity as confidence grows. This practice helps in building a positive momentum, showing that goals are attainable with effort and perseverance.

Something to remember: Don’t be overwhelmed with the task of building a big brick wall, focus on one brick at a time, and celebrate each brick.

Practice Self Love

Practising self love is about nurturing a positive relationship with yourself, acknowledging your worth, and accepting your strengths and weaknesses. It's an essential step in growing confidence and improving self-esteem, as it shifts the focus from self-criticism to self-acceptance and appreciation. Consider enrolling in an online course focused on self love and personal development. These courses can offer structured guidance, practical exercises, and community support to help you deepen your understanding of self love and integrate it into your daily life.

Surround Yourself with Positive Influence

The company you keep can have a profound impact on your self-esteem. Surrounding yourself with supportive, positive people can uplift and inspire you. Positive social interactions can reinforce feelings of self-worth and provide a supportive network for personal growth. Engage in communities or groups that align with your interests and values to foster a sense of belonging and acceptance. Something to remember: You are the average of the 5 people you hang around the most. Choose wisely.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Acknowledging and celebrating achievements, no matter how small, can significantly boost self-esteem. It’s important to recognise personal successes and allow yourself to feel proud of them. This reinforces the idea that you are capable and deserving of accomplishment. Keep a success journal or share your achievements with friends or mentors to validate your progress and hard work. Something to remember: You and your achievements are always worth celebrating.

Engage in Physical Activity

Regular physical activity can enhance self-esteem by improving physical health, providing a sense of achievement, and releasing endorphins that improve mood. Find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s yoga, running, or dancing, and make it a regular part of your routine. The physical and mental benefits can contribute to a more positive self-image and increased confidence. Something to remember: Physical activity is not a punishment for what you have eaten, it is a celebration of what your body can do!

Keep in Mind

Self-esteem is a crucial element of your mental and emotional well-being, significantly influencing your ability to set and achieve goals, maintain healthy relationships, and have a positive self-perception. While it's normal to face confidence dips occasionally, persistent low self-esteem can hinder your happiness and increase your vulnerability to mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
