The Power of Feeling Supported: Why We Thrive When We Share
- Carol Robinson
Have you ever faced a challenge that felt overwhelming until you shared it with someone who truly listened? Whether it’s a physical storm or an emotional one, the weight we carry becomes lighter when we have a support system to lean on.
Feeling supported isn’t just about having people around, it’s about knowing that when life feels uncertain, we don’t have to face it alone.
Support in the Face of Uncertainty
Recently, two situations reminded me just how important connection and support are during difficult times.
1. A Community of Support Before the Storm
As a cyclone approached the coastline, my friends and I had a group chat where we checked in on each other, shared updates, and made sure everyone was prepared.
One friend, living alone by the beach, felt especially vulnerable. She wasn’t just concerned about the storm itself, she was anxious about navigating the uncertainty.
The support given made her not feel alone...
✔ A friend came over to physically help her move important items.
✔ Our group offered emotional support through messages and calls.
✔ She felt seen, heard, and reassured in a moment of uncertainty.
She later shared how deeply grateful she was, not just for the practical help, but for the emotional safety of knowing people had her back.
2. Holding Space for a Friend Across the World
Support isn’t always about physical presence, sometimes, it’s about being emotionally available for someone in need.
A friend overseas recently reached out, struggling with a challenging situation that had become an emotional burden. They didn’t need a solution—they just needed to know someone was there to listen, hold space, and offer perspective if needed.
They felt safe enough to be vulnerable, and in doing so, they lifted some of the weight they had been carrying alone.
The Common Thread: Sharing Eases the Burden
Both of these situations highlight something crucial: feeling isolated in a struggle can make it feel 10x heavier.
We often try to "handle things on our own," fearing that sharing our struggles will make us seem weak, needy, or like a burden, but the truth is, opening up is one of the strongest things we can do.
💡 As the saying goes, “A burden shared is a burden halved.”
When we allow ourselves to be supported, physically, emotionally, or both, we find balance, resilience, and the courage to keep moving forward.
