The Importance of Self-Connection For Mental Health
- Carol Robinson
Understanding Self-Care to Connect With Yourself
Self-care consists of routines that people can routinely follow to reduce stress and maintain their well-being. It contributes to health by aiding in stress management, boosting vitality and improving the mind-body connection.
Practising self-care is not a one-off occurrence but a journey of self-nurturing. It represents your pledge to prioritise your well-being, creating a personal haven, just for yourself.
Different Forms of Taking Care of Yourself
There are lots of different ways to practice self-care, including:
Physical - exercise, balanced diet, hydration and a good night’s rest
Emotional - connecting with feelings, finding strategies to overcome negative emotions and to sit with your emotions, really feel into them.
Mental - reading, learning new skills, practising mindfulness
Social - nurturing relationships, building support networks
Spiritual - meditation, prayer, spending time in nature
Misconceptions Surrounding Self-Care
There are common misconceptions about self-care, like the idea that it's selfish or indulgent.
However, self-care is not about being egocentric- rather; it's about taking charge of your well-being so you can be there for others emotionally and energetically.
When you make self-care a priority you become better equipped to handle life's challenges and offer support to those around you.
Recognising the importance of prioritising self-care as a need rather than a luxury is key to nurturing a well-rounded and healthy lifestyle.
Tip: Incorporate self-care as an essential part of your routine, just like brushing your teeth or having meals.
4 Strategies for Cultivating Self-Connection
1. Practising Mindfulness
Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment without passing judgement. It helps in developing self-awareness by enabling you to observe your thoughts and emotions without attachment.
Engaging in mindfulness can be as straightforward as dedicating a moment each day to focus on your breath or participating in specific mindfulness activities. Over time mindfulness helps promote your understanding of yourself and fosters feelings of tranquillity and clarity.
Tip: One practice that resonates with me is breathing; it grounds me instantly and reconnects me to the current moment. I regularly take conscious breaths into my belly with the pattern of 4 seconds inhale and 8 seconds exhale at least 3 times. A wonderful way to relax my system.
2. Keeping a Journal
Journaling is a powerful tool for introspection and self-reflection.
By jotting down your thoughts and feelings you can gain insights into your world and recognise recurring patterns that impact your emotional well-being.
Keeping a journal enables you to monitor growth, express emotions freely and explore your thoughts within a safe and confidential space.
Starting a journal can help you stay in tune with yourself, manage your emotions better and give you a way to process the things that happen.
If you're new to journaling, here are some tips to get you started. There is no right or wrong when it comes to the time you journal or the actual type of journal book that you have… just start with love in your heart and write freely about your thoughts and feelings.
3. Positive Affirmations
Using positive affirmations is a great way to boost your emotional health and well-being.
Positive affirmations at the beginning of the day have completely transformed my perspective on life and my sense of self.
By repeating words of encouragement to yourself can change how you think and develop a positive outlook on life. Positive affirmations counter negative self-talk and help reinforce a positive self-image.
Affirmations can have a great effect on your mental health when you incorporate them into your daily routine, such as saying them in the morning or writing them down as you go. It is a great way to reprogram your subconscious mind.
Tip: I've found that starting my day with affirmations has significantly improved my outlook on life and sense of self. So here's a suggestion; I always advise my clients to maintain a gratitude journal; it's a way to kick off or wrap up the day on a note… feel into what is best for you and your schedule.
4. Self-Reflection Exercises
Your self-awareness can be increased by participating in self-reflection exercises such as posing challenging questions to yourself or weighing different points of view on a certain circumstance.
Try and incorporate evaluation and reflection into your daily routine by engaging in self-check-ins or end-of-day reflections.
Tip: Reflecting on your day before bedtime can bring clarity and insight into your behaviours and emotions. Always remember to be kind to yourself. Self love is about progress, not perfection.
